Scope and Contents
The collection consists of a notebook containing brief transcriptions of C. F. W. Walther's Lutherstunden lectures and transcriptions of sermons by Walther and others, apparently used by Dornseif in his ministry as they bear date notations during his time of service at Zion Lutheran Church (Wilton, Iowa: 1888-1910).

Biographical / Historical
Philip J. Dornseif was born March 21, 1856 at Centerville, Illinois, the son of Teacher J. Ludwig Dornseif. He was confirmed at New Gehlenbeck, Illinois, where his father was the teacher, and later attended Concordia College (Fort Wayne, Indiana: 1868-1875) and Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis: 1875-1878). He was ordained at Robin (Atkins), Iowa, on August 18, 1878 by Pastor Ph. Studt. He served parishes at Elkport, Alta, Wilton and Newhall, Iowa, until 1918, when he resigned. He also served as a circuit visitor (counselor) in the Iowa District. He married Maria Guenther in 1880; she died in 1895. The couple had two sons and six daughters. Dornseif died on 21 December 1934 in Orange, California.
