- Correspondence regarding College of Presidents Meeting (September 1964) | Ten Questions on the Habel Essay
- (1) May Ezekiel 28:12-19 be regarded as "one other tradition of the Fall" which survived Israel?
- (2) May Habel properly insist that "it is not necessary to demand that from our perspective of the nature of history every action or speech corresponds precisely to the specific stages or incidents (ipsissima acta) in the first revolt, or the very words (ipsissima verba) involved on the occasion."
- (3) Does the "symbolic understanding" of the serpent as the agent or medium for portraying the mystery and nature of temptation more fully emphasize such mystery than a literal interpretation would?
- (4) Do the following passages (Revelation 12:9; 20:2; 2 Corinthians 11:3; and Romans 16:20) require a non-symbolic interpretation of "serpent" in Genesis 3?
- (5) May Habel properly insist that because the phrase "tree of life" is used elsewhere in the Scripture in a symbolic sense, therefore, it is proper to see the phrase symbolically in Genesis 3?
- (6) Is the following conclusion valid: "The tree of knowledge of good and evil represents the boundary or limitation of human knowing and experience with the realm of the divine and any human efforts to break through the barrier...are simultaneously condemned."
- (7) What is your reaction to Habel's interpretation of "cherubim" as outlined under "Heavenly Forces and Beings?"
- (8) Are there Biblical passages which militate against his interpretation of "Ye Shall Surely Die?"
- (9) In his discussion of Messianic prophecy, Habel adopts a wider meaning of the "messianic". Does he do the text of the Scripture an injustice in that way?
- (10) Would you identify anthropomorphisms in Genesis 3? Do they say anything to interpreters about the form, or genre, of the narrative?
