Biographical / Historical
Lutheran Church Library Association (LCLA) was founded in 1958 by a group of lay people interested in the growth of libraries in Lutheran churches.
The first president of LCLA was Erwin E. John. He was also the editor of their journal, Lutheran Libraries. The following publishers supported this venture: Augsburg Publishing House, Augustana Book Concern, Muhlenburg Press, and Concordia Publishing House.
While this venture was brought about by Lutheran interests, over time membership was opened to various other Christian denominations. In the fall of 2004, the membership voted to rename the organization National Church Library Association. The journal changed names also, becoming Libraries Alive.
After struggling with declining membership and years of insufficient funding, the membership voted to accept a Plan of Dissolution, and the organization ceased operation on Decmeber 31, 2012.
