The collection consists of personal records and correspondence, a diary and documents from a mission trip to India and synodical director of missions, mementoes from his seminary experiences and a history of the Friedrich family dating from 1735.

    Biographical / Historical

    Julius A. Friedrich was born on 12 January 1862 in Huntington, Indiana. He was the son of Rev. Edward Julius Friedrich and Sophie Charlotte Wille. He went to parochial school for seven years. He attended Concordia College, Fort Wayne, Indiana, from 1877 to 1884. He also went to Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis, Missouri) graduating in 1887. He cherished the memory of visiting Dr. C. F. W. Walther during his terminal illness and of the last seminary diploma signed by Walther’s hand.

    He vicared for four months at Memphis, Tennessee. He was ordained and installed at First Lutheran Church (Chattanooga, Tennessee) on May 15, 1887.

    He served First Lutheran Church (Knoxville, Tennessee) from 1892 to 1901; Immanuel Lutheran Church (Saint Charles, Missouri) from 1901 to 1923 (during which time he was director of foreign missions for the Missouri Synod from 1912 to 1915); and Trinity Lutheran Church (Creighton, Missouri) from 1923 to 1924. In 1924 he founded Saint Paul Lutheran Church (Iowa City, Iowa) and was campus pastor at the State University in Iowa City, as well as chaplain at various Iowa state hospitals. He resigned from full-time ministry in 1938.

    He was married on August 11, 1887 to Bertha Schick, who died in 1937. They had eleven children. He died on April 14, 1958 in Saint Louis was is buried in Saint Charles, Missouri. He was survived by four sons: Dr. E. J. Friedrich (Wheat Ridge, Colorado); Dr. W. G. Friedrich (Valparaiso, Indiana); Edgar J. Friedrich (Burbank, California); and Paul Friedrich (Saint Louis); and five daughters: Mrs. M. L. Duffal and Mrs. W. W. Gnuse (Saint Louis); Mrs. A. J. Weber (Louisville, Illinois); Mrs. Paul Ludwig (Navasota, Texas); Dr. Ruth Friedrich (Topeka, Kansas); a brother, Theodore Fischer (Woodstock, Illinois); a sister, Mrs. Eleanor Klein (Los Angeles, California); 20 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
