Biographical / Historical

Carl A. Gaertner was born 20 April 1910 in Port Arthur, Texas to Pastor and Mrs. Henry C. Gaertner. He was educated at Saint John College (Winfield, Kansas) and Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis, B.D., 1934).

He served as pastor of Saint Paul Lutheran Church (Plainview, Texas, 1934-1942), Trinity Lutheran Church (Brownsville, Texas, 1942-1951) and Zion Lutheran Church (Dallas, Texas, 1951-1976).

He served in several positions in the Texas District, including second and first vice-president. He was a member of the Missouri Synod's Commission on Theology and Church Relations and represented the synod at several theological meetings in Europe.

In light of his contributions to district and synod, Concordia Seminary, Saint Louis, gave him a doctor of divinity degree, honoris causa, in 1966.

Gaertner died March 16, 1996.
