Scope and Contents

The collection contains correspondence and photographs as well as one charcoal sketch. The correspondence was between H. Duemling and Mr. Theodor Lange who was the manager of Louis Lange Publishing Co., (forerunner of CPH) and responsible for publishing the Abendschule magazine. The correspondence is filed chronologically and ranges from 1884 to 1887. One photograph depicts Mrs. Duemling, however, we do not know her name.

Biographical / Historical

Herman Duemling was born in Germany in 1845; it is unknown when he came to America. From 1872-1874 he was a professor at the Teacher’s College in Addison, Illinois. In the years 1874 to 1899 he served as professor of science and mathematics at Concordia College in Fort Wayne, Indiana. During part of this time in Ft. Wayne he also served as editor of the Abendschule publication. He was also editor of Germania in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from 1899 until his death. Dr. Herman Duemling was also a very prolific writer and published several books on natural history and a series on arithmetic. He died on 11 March 1913 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
