Carl L. Dittmer (1833-1906) Collection
Scope and Contents
The collection contains a diary which describes the six week long journey from Germany to America on a sailing vessel in the summer of 1858. The diary is in German and has been transcribed from Dittmer’s handwriting into a typescript copy (also in German).

Biographical / Historical
Carl Louis Dittmer was born on 18 June 1833 in Zempelberg, West Prussia, Germany, and came to America at age 25. He settled in Boston, Massachusetts, and remained there until his death on 10 February 1906. In 1860 he married Sophie Miller. During the course of his life he lost five children, one son-in-law and one grandchild.
