Biographical / Historical

William Herman Theodore Dau was born on 8 February 1864 in Lauenburg, Pomerania. After graduating from Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis) in 1886, he served as a pastor in Memphis, moving in 1892 to Conover, North Carolina, where he served as a professor at Concordia College. From 1899 until 1905 he served Saint Paul (Hammond, Indiana), and from 1905 to 1926 he was on the faculty of Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis). From 1926 to 1929 he was the president of Valparaiso University. Besides academic posts, he was also involved in synodical government, serving as the vice-president of the Central District from 1903 to 1905.

He received the D.D. degree from the seminary in Adelaide, South Australia in 1923 and also from Concordia Seminary, 5aint Louis in 1939. The Litt.D. degree was conferred on him by Valparaiso University in 1939.

In 1888 he married Miss Louise Becker and had five daughters and two sons by her. Mrs. Dau died in 1928. In 1932 he remarried to Mrs. Elizabeth Friedrichs.

Dau was a prolific writer and was on the editorial staff of The Lutheran Witness, Homiletic Magazine, Theological Monthly, and Theological Quarterly. He edited Four Hundred Years and Ebenezer. In addition to writing several books concerning Reformation history, he was joint editor with Bente of the Concordia Triglotta.

He died on 21 April 1944.
