Burgdorf was born 12 July 1838 at Luttrum, Hanover, the son of tailor Henry Burgdorf and his wife Henrietta. He emigrated with his parents to Saint Louis, where he attended Christian day school, Concordia College and the theological seminary. Illness forced him to discontinue theological studies. After following several trades, he became a Lutheran school teacher at Red Bud, Illinois (1864-1865) and Zion Lutheran Church, Saint Louis (1865-1870). He was president of Walther College [high school], Saint Louis, from 1870 to 1910. He died 14 June 1930 at Springfield, Missouri.
