August Burgdorf (1864-1938) Papers
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of an autograph book from his school days with entries by family and friends between 1879 and 1882; a letter from C. F. W. Walther, 23 August 1884, regarding Burgdorf's service while still a student filling a vacancy in the Negro mission in Little Rock, Arkansas; copies of a letter of 12 September 1918 to Theodore Graebner regarding the use of the English language; and a notebook with detailed daily notes taken during an extensive mission survey tour of South America in 1922.

Biographical / Historical
Burgdorf was born 1 March 1864 at Red Bud, Illinois, the son of August C. Burgdorf (1838-1930) and Wilhelmine nee Brockmeier. He received pre-theological education at Concordia College (Fort Wayne, Indiana) and graduated from Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis) in 1885. He served 13 years in the Negro mission of the Lutheran Synodical Conference at New Orleans, Atlanta and Lincoln, Illinois. From 1903 until his death he was pastor of Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church, Chicago. He was a member of the Missouri Synod's board for South American missions and served as president of the board of directors of the Old Folks' Home at Arlington Heights, Illinois. He died 15 July 1938 in Chicago.
