Biographical / Historical
Friedrich (Frederick) Brand was born 9 September 1863 at Eden Valley, New York, the son of Pastor Peter Brand and Anne N. nee Hein. He graduated from Concordia College, Fort Wayne, Indiana, in 1883 and from Concordia Seminary, Saint Louis, in 1886. In 1887 he married Emma Thieme at Fort Wayne. He served as pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Braddock, Pennsylvania (1886-1893); Second Saint Paul Lutheran Church, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (1893-1903); and Trinity Lutheran Church, Springfield, Illinois (1903-1920). From 1920 until 1948 he was director of the Foreign Mission Board of the Missouri Synod. He also served as president of the Central Illinois District (1907-1917) and vice-president of the Missouri Synod (1917-1929). He died on 1 January 1949.
