The collection consists of a typed transcription of a letter from Birkmann to a friend, dated 22 October 1924, regarding the beginnings of the Missouri Synod's work in Texas.

Biographical / Historical
Gotthilf H. W. Birkmann was born 4 June 1854 in Waterloo, Illinois, to Pastor Johann Georg Birkmann and his wife Louise (nee Vallowe). He graduated from Concordia College (Fort Wayne, Indiana) in 1873 and from Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis) in 1876. He served as pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church (Fedor, Texas) from 1876 to 1879 and again from 1882 until his retirement in 1922. He was pastor of Zion Lutheran Church (Dallas, Texas) from 1879 to 1882. He was secretary and president of the Southern District of the LCMS and president of the Texas District from 1912 to 1920. His first wife was the daughter of Rev. John Kilian of Serbin, Texas, and his second wife was the widow of Pastor G. W. Benhken, the father of LCMS President John W. Behnken. Birkmann died 17 May 1944 at Giddings, Texas.
