Biographical / Historical

Concordia College is located in the Midway of metropolitan area of the Twin Cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis. The 26-acre campus at Concordia Avenue and Syndicate Street, St. Paul, near the University of Minnesota which offers additional academic and cultural resources. The original site and four buildings were purchased from the State of Minnesota in 1894. Additions to the campus were purchased in 1902, 1917, and 1948. Five acres were added in 1960, and five acres in 1969, enlarging the campus to its present size of twenty-six acres. In close proximity apartments were purchased on Marshall Avenue, Dayton Avenue and Lexington Parkway and are serving adequately as residences for students. Concordia College is one of sixteen colleges and seminaries affiliated with the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. It was founded in 1893 with a three-year classical and normal preparatory course. A fourth year was added in 1902 and two years of college in 1905. The normal preparatory course was discontinued in 1903. The first two years of a teacher education program for college women were added in 1950. The college was expanded in 1962 to a four-year degree- granting institution for college women in teacher education. In 1965 the male teacher education program was expanded to four years. The first class graduated from the Junior College in 1907. The total number of graduates from 1907 to 1970 is 3200. The Bachelor of Arts degree was conferred upon the first graduates of the program in June 1964.
