Julius Becker Papers
Scope and Contents
The collection contains copies of convention proceedings pertaining to the Schwagerehe issue (essay by C. F. W. Walther at the Synodical Conference, 1878) and Becker's discipline case (Michigan District, 1897) with Becker's notes and annotations. It also contains copies of protests and appeals by Becker and other tracts on the issue with Becker's notes.

Biographical / Historical
Becker was born 10 October 1866 in Colen, West Prussia. He attended Concordia College (Fort Wayne, Indiana) and graduated from Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis) in 1892. He was ordained and installed at Laws, California, on 24 August 1892 by J. M. Buehler to serve as a missionary of the California-Oregon District of the Missouri Synod. On 12 April 1896 he was installed as pastor of Saint Peter Lutheran Church (Saint Clair, Michigan). He resigned from the synod in 1897 over the issue of "Schwagerehe" (permissible degrees of relationship to marry) and joined the German Iowa Synod.
