The collection consists of correspondence, 1861-1869; a printed Latin oration (1868) and a book written with his brother Reinhold, Unsere Wege zur katholischen Kirche (1871).

Biographical / Historical
Herman Baumstark was educated at Heidelberg and Leipzig. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1860 and finished his training at Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis). He served as a pastor at Quincy and Aurora, Illinois, from 1861 to 1865. In 1865 he was called as an instructor at the Proseminary of the Missouri Synod in Saint Louis. He was the author of Geschichte der Christlichen Kirche, Erster Band: Die Geschichte der christlichen Kirche in den ersten drei Jahrhunderten umfassend (Saint Louis: Aug. Wiebusch u. Sohn, 1867). In 1869 he joined the Roman Catholic Church and became a professor at Cincinnati, Ohio. He also edited a Roman Catholic publication, Herold des Glaubens, beginning in September 1869.
