Scope and Contents

This collection consists mainly of Rev. Tonn's sermons, 14 folders of English sermons and one folder of German. There is also a personal folder that contains some of his notes and a Conference Paper on The Self-Communion of the Pastor, authored by him. This was presented at the Gulf States Pastoral Conference in Atlanta, Georgia in May 1948.

Biographical / Historical

Emil T. Tonn was born (December 6, 1900) in Boston, Massachusetts. He attended Concordia Collegiate Institute (Bronxville, New York) from 1914 - 1920 and then Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis, Missouri) from 1920 - 1924. He was ordained on September 21, 1924. He married Mildred Stelk on September 21, 1927. They had three children, Lois, Ruth Ann, and Eugene. Rev. Tonn served as parish pastor at Saint Paul Lutheran Church (Foley, Alabama: 1924-1929), Saint Paul Lutheran Church (Decatur, Alabama: 1929-1943), and Redeemer Lutheran Church (Florence, Alabama: 1946-1954). He served as a chaplain at a prisoner of war camp in DuPont, Delaware (1944-1946). He served the LCMS Southern District as Counselor (1950-1951), on the Board of Directors (1949-1951), and Chairman of the Board for Parish Education (1949-1951). Rev. Tonn died on October 29, 1954.
