Biographical / Historical

Paul Theodore Carl Rohde was born on January 31, 1870 in Merhewitz, near Halle, Germany. He came to the United States with his parents in 1892. They settled in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Paul went to Concordia College, Bronxville, New York, continuing in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He graduated from Concordia Theological Seminary, Springfiele, Illinois in 1907. He was sent as a missionary to Jacuhy, Brazil on September 19, 1907. As he was a circuit preacher, he rode on horseback to many of his ministry vilages, despite the weather, He was engaged to Emma Wehle, daughter of artist Frederick Wehle, Milwaukee, Wisconsin just before he left for Brazil. She was planning to join him in 1908 when living conditions improved, but Paul had to return to the United States in December 1908 due to ill health. They were married in May 1909. Paul also servied congregations in Fall River, Massachusetts, and Buffalo, Mendon, and Cohocton, Neew York. He died in 1931 from hyperthyroidism.
