Biographical / Historical
Thirteen voting members met on December 3, 1933 to ask for a release from Saint Paul Lutheran Church to organize a mission congregation in Sioux City's west side. The new congregation of Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church was formed that evening. Rev. G. A. Matthaidess was called to become the church's first pastor. After serving 23 years at Saint Paul, he accepted this call and was installed on December 31, 1933. That service conducted in both English and German was held at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, which served as the place of worship until the first building was built in 1936. The Pastor and Deacons organized the Sunday School which began on January 21, 1934. A special voters' meeting held on November 4, 1935 resulted in the congregation purchasing land. The house at the back of that property became the parsonage. The building program was initiated at a voters' meeting on January 7, 1936. The cornerstone was laid in the late summer of 1936. When the basement was completed, it served as the place of worship until the main auditorium was completed. The first service was held in the basement on November 26, 1936. The building was completed and dedicated on May 5, 1940. The congregation became self-sustaining on January 1, 1946. Late in 1954, the old house to the west of the church was purchased for Sunday School space. Two regular services began on a regular basis in March 1956. The congregation celebrated the 30th Anniversary in 1964, and dedication of the second church building was held on April 4, 1965. The 40th Anniversary was celebrated in 1973, followed by the 50th anniversary on December 4, 1983. The 75th Anniversary was celebrated on August 10, 2008. This congregation closed in 2021.
