Biographical / Historical

Oliver Harms was born on 11 December 1901 in Cole Camp, Missouri. He graduated from Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis) in 1926. He served congregations throughout Texas, including Eden, San Angelo, Brownwood, Eola, and Houston. In 1939 he became the second vice-president of the Texas District, and in 1942 he became its first vice-president, which he was until 1948. His service to the Synod began in 1956 when he became the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod's fourth vice-president. In 1959 he became the first vice-president. And in 1962 he became the president of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, a position hw held until 1969 and during which he was instrumental in forming the Lutheran Council U.S.A. Harms died on 3 June 1980.
