Biographical / Historical
As early as 1983 the Board for Missions of the Northern Illinois District began developing the possibility of a mission congregation in the Libertyville-Mundelein-Vernon Hills area. Commitments from neighboring congregations were made by the beginning of 1985 to help finance the new mission congregation and the Board for Missions went forward, looking for a mission developer-pastor and also for land acquisition. The District stepped forward boldly in September 1985 and purchased a five acre site in Indian Creek with a church building already existing on it. A call to develop the new mission was accepted by Rev. Philip J. Esala. He was installed on October 27, 1985 as Missionary-at-Large for the Northern Illinos District to develop the congregation, which was later named Risen Savior. The first organizational meeting was held on November 17, 1985. The opening service was scheduled for December 15, 1985. The Sunday School began on January 12, 1986. Risen Savior stood as a member congregation of the LCMS, and as of 1988, the congregation was no longer being supported by neighboring congregations and was paying the mortgage on the building.
