Biographical / Historical
Pastor William A. Ullerich, son of Mr. George Ullerich and Caroline nee' Hagemann, was born at Gray, Audubon County, Iowa, January 4, 1892. He was baptized in the Lutheran Church near Gray by pastor Anton Ehlers. He received his elementary education in Saint John Lutheran Church School in Charter Oak and was confirmed there by Pastor A. Amstein.
He entered Concordia College and Seminary in Springfield, Illinois in September 1908. His vicarage year was spent teaching school and preaching under Pastor Karl Kretschmar near Ayr, Nebraska.
After his graduation from the Seminary in Springfield in June 1914, he served for 23 months in a new mission field in Nebraska serving four different stations on a salary basis of $400 a year.
In 1916 he was called as the first resident pastor of Saint James Lutheran Church in Victor, Iowa. He was married here on October 5, 1916, to Emma nee' Ansorge of Saint Louis, Missouri. He served this pastorate until 1925. Four of the five Ullerich children, Victor, Adella, Ruth, Lois, and Waldo were born here.
In 1925 he was called to serve Saint Andrew Lutheran Church in Van Horne, Iowa. Here during the second year of his ministry a new church was built and dedicated to the glory of God. During this pastorate of 22 years the four oldest of the children were united in holy matrimony.
From 1947 to 1953 Pastor Ullerich served Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg, Iowa, the only Lutheran Church in Chickasaw County of the Missouri Synod.
Since 1953 the Rev. William Rev. Ullerich was privileged to minister to the energetic group of Lutheran Christians in Immanuel Lutheran Church, 8 miles northeast of Iowa Falls, Iowa. On September 6, 1964 he completed under God's merciful goodness 50 years of service in Christ's Kingdom as an ordained pastor. He will move to Fairmont, Minnesota this month to enjoy his retirement near his youngest daughter and her family.
Looking back over the span of these 50 eventful years, he says: "I am grateful to my Lord Jesus Christ who has permitted me to serve Him in Church so many years, overlooking my weaknesses and shortcomings, and blessing my humble efforts to His glory and my own spiritual welfare. To Him alone be all praise and glory!"
