Biographical / Historical

Karl Arndt attended Saint John's College, Winfield, Kansas; Concordia Seminary, Saint Louis, Missouri; Washington University, Saint Louis (B.A.); and Johns Hopkins University (Ph.D.). From 1945 to 1950 he was in charge of the Office of Church-State Relations in the U.S. Office of Military Government for Wurttemberg-Baden, Germany. He was heavily involved in the Missouri Synod’s post-World War 2 relief effort in Germany through the Emergency Planning Council and was also instrumental in arranging the first of the Bad Boll theological conferences between the Missouri Synod and German Lutherans.

Arndt’s professional career was spent as a scholar specializing in utopian societies and a linguist. He was head of the Department of German at Clark University, Worcester, Massachusetts. Much of his research was devoted to a study of George Rapp’s Harmony Society (1805-1905) of Harmony, Pennsylvania; New Harmony, Indiana; and Economy, Pennsylvania. He also was co-author with May E. Olson of German-American Newspapers and Periodicals, 1732–1955, and The German Language Press of the Americas, 1732–1968.
