Biographical / Historical
On March 22, 1903 Saint Luke congregation in Cleveland begin a mission station in Lakewood to accommodate their members who lived in Lakewood. The first worship service was held on March 29, 1903 in the building of the Swedenborgian Church. On May 3, the small congregation was told that the Swedenborgian Church would no longer be available for their worship. The members of the mission met on June 28, 1903 and pledged funds toward the purchase of land, seeing the necessity of having their own chapel. Saint Luke voted to continue this mission. At a meeting on April 14, 1904, it was resolved to adopt the name Saint Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, U.A.C. (Unaltered Augsburg Confession). The cornerstone was laid for the building on April 24, 1904, and dedication of the building was held on June 26, 1904. The congregation decided to join the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio and Other States on May 18, 1906. A building committee was elected to propose plans for a new building in early 1915. The new church building was dedicated on April 22, 1917. In 1926, the first chapel which had served as a school, was torn down and a new school building was erected in its place.
In 1913, some of the members of Saint Paul's concluded that the time had come for the formation of an exclusively English Lutheran Church in Lakewood. They were released from membership and formed Pilgrim Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1914.
Pilgrim and Saint Paul combined to form Pilgrim Saint Paul Lutheran Church in 2004. Pilgrim Saint Paul closed in 2015.
