Biographical / Historical
During the 1950s, there was quite a bit of population growth in the Eastover-Oxon Hill area of Maryland. Members from Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Washington DC, who were living in the area established their first Sunday School branch in 1951 in the Glassmoor Apartment complex in Eastover, Maryland. As the Sunday School grew and other people became interested, plans were made to establish a Lutheran church in the Oxon Hill area. A two-room dwelling was purchased on Oxon HIll Road in 1955 with the help of the Southeastern District Mission Board. The building was remodeled to serve as a chapel and the dedication and services were held on April 15, 1956. Rev. Herbert T. Bernthal, pastor of Bethlehem, conducted the services until the first pastor was called, Candidate Carl Reiter. He was called to serve both Oxon Hill and Our Savior Lutheran Church in Indian Head, Maryland. The congregation was formally organized on January 27, 1957. Pastor Reiter accepted a call to chaplaincy, so Rev. Robert Schoenheider was installed as pastor to serve the Oxon Hill congregation only in December 1958. Due to an increase in membership and the building of the beltway that took some of the church's property, a search was begun for a new church property. THe property was purchased in 1961 and the building was dedicated on November 17, 1963. The fifth anniversary of the congregation was celebrated in 1962. Many additions to the first building occurred. Additional Sunday School rooms and the fellowship hall were dedicated on June 25, 1967. The annex built next to the nave was dedicated on December 22, 1968. The congregation celebrated its 20th anniversary in 1977, with the 25th in 1982. In 1980 an extension and the stone wall to the front of the nave were added. The east wall of the nave was renovated and new entrance doors were added in 1982. Over the years, renovations were made to the kichen, roof, , and in 1991, the pastor's office and conference room were renovated and consecrated. The 35th anniversary was celebrated in 1992, and the 50th in 2007. A courtyard was added in 1995. This congregation closed on June 24, 2018.
