Biographical / Historical
The first service of this congregation was held in November 1892 in English by Rev. Martin S. Sommer of Grace Lutheran Church at Holy Cross School assembly hall. The first service held January 1893 in Anchor Hall, Jefferson and Park Avenues. The English Evangelical Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer was organized in March 1894. A tornado destroyed Anchor Hall in May 1896, so the congregation worshipped in the social hall of Emmaus Lutheran Church. The cornerstone for a new church building was laid in January 1897 and was dedicated in March 1897. A Christian Day School was started in the church basement in April 1897. The congregation was accepted as a member of the English Synod in April 1901. Dedication of a chapel to be used as church and school occurred in September 1901. In 1903, operation of the Christian Day School was suspended indefinitely. The cornerstone of a new church building was laid in May 1908 and the building was dedicated in January 1909. In May 1911, Our Redeemer hosted the convention of the English Synod that dissoved and became the English District of the LCMS. Our Redeemer Cemetery was purchased in 1915. The front half of the chapel was replaced by a two-story parsonage in 1918, and the congregation celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1919. Renovations of the interior of the church were done in the 1920s. Our Redeemer was granted a perpetual charter under the laws of the State of Missouri in February 1935. The official name of the congregation was changed to the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in December 1939. Affiliation of the congregation was changed to the Western District of the LCMS in June 1940. The 50th anniversary was celebrated in March 1944. Our Redeemer became a charter member of the Lutheran Association for Higher Education in 1945. Property was purchased for a teacherage in November 1956. Classes of Lutheran High School South were held at Our Redeemer in 1957-1958. Celebration of the 50th anniversary of the present church building was held in October 1958, and the congregation celebrated its 75th anniversary in January-May 1969.
