AUG 2017 #17 Accession

  • AUG 2017 #17 M1: This medal (3" diameter) commemorates the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. The obverse shows busts of Martin Luther and Elector Frederick the Wise on either side. Together they are lifting a basket off of a lit candle which is emerging from a Bible with the following two references: "John 1:1-14" and "Romans 1:16-17". In the foreground in front of Luther is a raised Luther Rose over a sheet with the 95 theses. Elector Frederick is holding a sword with his right hand while holding the basket with his left. They both have legends with them: "Dr. Martin Luther | Elector Prince Frederick the Wise". The surrounding legend reads: "500th Anniversary of the Reformation | "Be Steadfast...Immovable...in the Lord." 1 Cor. 15:58 | MMXVII". The reverse shows Luther on the left foreground with hammer in hand posting the 95 theses. Two men working at a printing press are in the right background. The inner legend reads: "Printing presses spread Luther's 95 Theses - Revelation 14:6-7". The surrounding legend reads: "Reformation Begins 31 October 1517 | American Lutheran Publicity Bureau".
  • AUG 2017 #17 M2: This silver medal (3" diameter) with original hanger serves as a joint commemoration of the Reformation by Lutherans and Catholics. The obverse shows a bust of Martin Luther on the left in his doctor's robe and hat holding in his right hand the Bible: "Der Heilige Sch". On the right is Pope Francis wearing a cassock with a short shoulder cape (pellegrina) and a pectoral cross. On Luther's left is a seal of Luther's Rose. On Francis' right is his coat-of-arms. Above at the center is a seal of a dove. The surrounding legend reads: "2016 - From Conflict to Communion - The First Joint Commemoration of the Reformation - 2017 | Lutherans and Roman Catholics Together".

  • MAY 2019 #12 M1: This is a lacquered gold-toned pin (51mm diameter) commemorating the 1983 Convention of the Metropolitan New York Synod (LCA). The obverse has a quarter bust (left) of Martin Luther in Talar. There is a full-color Luther rose to the left and the seal of the Metropolitan New York Synod of the Lutheran Church in America on the right. The central legend reads: "Fordham University". The outer legend reads: "Metropolitan N.Y. Synod - L.C.A. - Convention - June 2-4 | 1483 - Martin Luther - 1983". Designed by Frederick J. Schumacher
  • MAY 2019 #12 M2: This is a lacquered gold-toned pin (54mm diameter) honoring Richard John Neuhaus. The obverse shows a collared pastor holding a print edition of the Forum Letter (Volume 3:10/11 OCT/NOV 1974. The inner legend reads: "Editor of Forum Letter - 1974-1990". There is a Luther rose to the right. The outer legend reads: "The American Publicity Bureau Salutes Pastor Richard John Neuhaus | November 3rd, 1990".
  • MAY 2019 #12 M3: This is a white Meissen porcelain medal (65mm diameter) commemorating the 900th anniversary of the Warburg Castle. The obverse has a gold overlay of the Wartburg Castle and the Meissen symbol of crossed swords. The reverse has a stylized graphic surrounding by the legend: "WARTBVRG - 1067|1967".

  • MAY 2019 #12 M8: This is a lacquered gold-tone pin (51mm diameter). At the center is a bust of J. S. Bach with the following legend below: "To God Alone the Glory". The outer legend reads: "54th Lutheran Summer Conference - Silver Bay, N.Y. | 1685 J.S. Bach 1985".
  • MAY 2019 #12 M9: This is a lacquered gold-tone pin (58mm diameter). At the center is Luther's rose. The surrounding area is divided into quadrants. The NE quadrant has a seal (logo) and the legend: "Lutheran Church in America". The SE quadrant has the following legend: "...That You be Perfectly Joined Together" 1 Cor. 1:10b. The SW quadrant has a prolate spheroid with a central cross and the surrounding legend: "The American Lutheran Church". The NW quadrant has a rounded square with a centered cross and the letters: "A E L C". The outer legend reads: "The Constituting Convention - Metro N.Y. Synod.   • MAY 2019 #12 M10: This is a lacquered gold-tone pin (45mm diameter). At the center is a quarter bust of Martin Luther. The background is yellow. To the left is Luther's rose. the legend reads: "The 500th Anniversary of Martin Luther's Birth, November 10, 1483 | The 300th Anniversary of White Plains and Westchester County, N.Y." The outer legend reads: "St. Matthew's Lutheran Church - White Plains, N.Y. | Looks Forward to A Dual Celebration in 1983". This pin has broken studs and a piece of velcro affixed to the back.

Below this is a circular logo of Metropolitan New York Synod - Lutheran Church with the dates, "1786 - 1984" around a Chi Rho. Below this is a semi-circle with a centered cross arched over by a rainbow and the legend: "Proclaim and Set Free". On the left is a small cityscape of Toronto and the legend: "The Metro N.Y.   • MAY 2019 #12 M32: This is a purple plastic button. A line image of Martin Luther is at the center with his name on either side: "Martin Luther".
