Biographical / Historical
Our Redeemer was officially organized on September 10, 1946 with fifty-two communicant members transferred from the parent congregation, Trinity Lutheran, Muskegon. It was then known as The Lutheran Church in East Muskegon, and the church's name was officially changed to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church on October 13, 1946. The first parsonage was purchased then as well. Worship services were held in the auditorium of Radio Station WKBZ, and the parsonage was the center of many church activities and meeting place for church organizations. That November, the land was purchased for the future church and school building site. The first building committee began its work in January 1947 for the first unit of the school building, which would serve as a worship center for over 25 years. The first daughter congregation, Saint Mark, Muskegon was established in 1853 and the second, Faith Lutheran, Whitehall, in 1954. The facility was expanded in 1958, and groundbreaking for a new church building was held in 1970. The new church building was dedicated in 1971, the 25th anniversary of the congregation. The 10th anniversary of the congregation was celebrated in 1956 and the 15th in 1961. Our Redeemer and Trinity Lutheran Schools consolidated to from West Shore Lutheran School in 1995. The 50th anniversary of the congregation was celebrated in 1996. The school building began to be leased in 1998 in preparation for the church building expansion. Construction on the Family Life Center began in 2000, and was dedicated in April 2004. Our Redeemer closed on September 12, 2021 and merged with Trinity Lutheran Church, Roosevelt Park (Muskegon).
