Biographical / Historical
The Wolfe family moved from Silver City to Grants in 1955. Pastor Bickle from Silver City wrote to Pastor Busse of Trinity Lutheran Church, Gallup and asked him to check into things in Grants. He came to Grants on January 9, 1956 and made arrangements to hold services in Grants. The first service was held in the Community (Presbyterian) Church on February 26, 1956. From 1956-1959, services were held at the Community (Presbyterian) Church, the Wolfe Residence, Spanish Congregational Church, and sometimes all attended evening services in Gallup. Sunday School was sometimes held in individual homes. Groundbreaking service for a church building was held on May 24, 1959, and the Dedication Services for the building were held on November 29, 1959. The congregation began with a small membership that grew through the opening of uranium mines. At the closing of the mines, Mount Calvary lost members to retirement, moves to former homes, and transfers to other jobs in other states. The closing service for Mount Calvary was held on August 15, 2021.
