Biographical / Historical
In 1872, two additional preaching stations were opened in the Saint Louis area, Bethany and Grace Lutheran Church. Both congregations were quite small and were served by one pastor. Grace initially worshiped in a small frame building in a section of the city known as Butschertown. Both congregations functioned together as a dual parish for seven years when the Grace portion moved the church building. Since Grace was "too far out in the country", the congregation then sold those holdings and purchased a site on Easton Avenue which served as the church home until June 1958 when those facilities were dedicated. Grace did not have a resident pastor until 1885 when Rev. H.A.E. Schaefer was installed. Until then, Grace was served by neighboring pastors. The first building on Easton Avenue was built in 1885 together with a parsonage. The first building served as both a place of worship on Sunday and a school during the week until 1910 when a new building was constructed. In 1922, another parsonage and the school building were constructed. The congregation celebrated its seventy-fifth anniversary in 1947. New facilities were built and dedicated in June 1958. Stained glass windows were added and dedicated throughout the 1960s. The tenth anniversary of the dedication of the building was held on June 30, 1968, and the thity-fifth anniversary of the dedication was held on June 27, 1993. The centennial celebration of the congregation was held in June 1972. The faclities were sold in 2019, but a small group is currently still worshiping in 2022.
