Biographical / Historical
The Northeast section of Oshkosh was canvassed by Rev. Paul Lueders and members of Bethlehem congregation and Rev. John Elbert of Trinity in February 1948. One lot with a small frame house was purchased on February 24, 1948. Rev. Johnson of Fond du Lac was asked by the Secretary of Missions, Rev. E.H. Schmidt, to serve this congregation until the first pastor could be called. The first service was held on April 4, 1948. Sunday School was opened the same day with five children. Redeemer Lutheran Church was formally organized on December 12, 1948. Another lot was purchased on December 20, 1948. Rev. Ray Stry was called as the first pastor. He began serving on March 1, 1949, and was installed on April 3, 1949. In Spring 1949, the little chapel was moved from the original lot. The Stry family moved into the parsonage on June 15, 1949, and it was dedicated on July 31, 1949. Construction of the church building began immediately, and it was dedicated on October 23, 1949. The congregation purchased additional land in 1953. It was decided to construct a new church building on November 25, 1956. Mortgage burning for the first church building took place on March 3, 1957. Ground-breaking for the new building took place on August 10, 1958, and the cornerstone was laid on November 23, 1958. This building was dedicated on June 14, 1959. The 15th Anniversary was celebrated in 1964, with the 25th on January 13, 1974. The first church and parsonage were sold in October 1970, and a new parsonage was purchased on October 1, 1971. The 50th Anniversary of the congregation was celebrated on June 14, 1998. Redeemer's closing worship service took place on January 16, 2000.
