Biographical / Historical
On June 2, 1950, a meeting was held in the parsonage by members of both Bethlehem and Saint John congregations of rural Upham that were interested in starting a new congregation in Upham. The decision was made to start a preaching mission. VBS was held in the public school building for three weeks in June. The first worship service and Sunday School session were held on July 23, 1950, in the Icelandic Lutheran Church building. Evening services were held for the first few months, and then 1pm services began in November. The congregation was organized on November 14, 1950. An LWML was organized the same day. Twenty-three communicant members originally from Bethlehem and seventeen from Saint John formed the forty communicant members, with a total of 59 souls. An old church building with furnishings was purchased in town in 1951. In 1955, a basement was built, and the church was remodeled. A chime system was installed, and a new organ was purchased in 1961. The congregation voted to dissolve in April 1970.
