Biographical / Historical
This LCMS ministry was known as LCMS National Housing Support Corporation and Lutheran Housing Support Corporation. There are documents in this collection from the Department of Social Ministry dated 1969 that discuss the LCMS Overview of Housing Ministry. In the 1990s, this area was under the Board for Human Care Ministries. Housing ministry is the local application of a Biblical perspective to contemporary housing issues. Each local housing ministry uniquely responds to the needs of the entire person-physical needs for affordable housing/shelter and necessary supportive services, and the spiritual need for the Good News of Jesus Christ and His healing power in a hurting world. The benefits of housing ministry are drawn from the nationally recognized success of the Nehemiah housing experience in Brooklyn, New York. The mission strategy for LCMS congregations was to retain members, particularly leaders, for the local parish as they chose to buy Nehemiah homes, to engage in outreach evangelism to newly arriving families, and to recruit students for Lutheran schools from among Nehemiah families-prospective members for the local church.
