Biographical / Historical
Many Missouri Synod Lutherans were moving into the North Broad-Esplanada area of New Orleans due to rapid growth of the city in 1910. On March 6, 2010, Pastor Hartman of Christ Lutheran Church began holding services on Sunday afternoons in a vacant store. The Mission Board of the Southern District saw the need for a full-time pastor, so O. W. Wismar was ordained and installed as the first pastor of Mount Calvary on July 31, 1910. The church was organized and chartered by the State of Louisiana, and on November 21, 1912, the cornerstone was laid for the church building. It was dedicated on February 9, 1913. The parsonage was completed on December 1, 1916. A parochial school was started in fall 1922. The school building was dedicated in fall 1923. However, due to various difficulties, the school closed in 1928, never to reopen. The Golden Anniversary of the congregation was celebrated on March 5, 1960. In 1977, Mount Calvary became a dual parish with Saint Matthew Lutheran Church. The 75th anniversary was celebrated on October 13, 1985. The congregation dissolved in 2004.
