Biographical / Historical
Rev. Herbert H. Nagel was called in September 1945 to establish a Mission in South Des Plaines for the English District of the LCMS. The first meeting concerning establishing this congregation took place on October 9, 1945. The congregation officially organized on November 7, 1945, officially became known as Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on November 13, and was incorporated on November 20, 1945. The first worship service was held on December 2, 1945 in one of the members' homes. Members of the congregation started work on an all-purpose building beginning in January 1946. The new chapel was ready on April 19, 1946. On July 19, 1947, members began working on a new addition to the chapel. Building plans for a new church building were approved on January 14, 1958, and groundbreaking took place on January 11, 1959. The cornerstone-laying occurred on June 21, 1959. The new church building was dedicated on March 6, 1960. The 20th anniversary service of praise was held on December 5, 1965. Groundbreaking for enlarged church facilities was held on March 10, 1968, Cornerstone-Laying on July 14, 1968, and the new facilities were dedicated on May 25, 1969. The 25th anniversary was celebrated on December 6, 1970. A bell tower was dedicated in December 1984. The 50th anniversary was celebrated in 1995. This congregation closed in 2021.
