Content Description
Saint John Lutheran Church began in 1910 through the Mission Board of the Atlantic District of the LCMS. The congregation was formally organized on December 4, 1911. The following year, Saint John was formally incorporated as Saint John's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Harrison, New Jersey. The first church building was dedicated on May 31, 1914, the Feast of Pentecost. In 1926, a lot was purchased for a new church building. The cornerstone for that building was laid on September 30, 1928, and it was dedicated on January 12, 1929. The congregation did not formally join the LCMS until 1928. The twenty-fifth anniversary of the congregation was celebrated on December 6, 1936. The 15th Anniversary of the building and Mortgage Burning was held on January 16, 1944. The parsonage was purchased in 1947. The groundbreaking ceremony for the new Parish Education Building took place on June 2, 1957. The fiftieth anniversary of this congregation was celebrated throughout 1961. The motto for the fiftieth anniversary was "Psalm 126:3; "The Lord has done great things for us; whereof we are glad." On November 9, 1986, the seventy-fifth anniversary was celebrated. May 19, 1996, marked the celebration of the eighty-fifth anniversary. Saint John celebrated ninety years in 2001.
