Biographical / Historical

The beginning of Epiphany Lutheran Church occurred at an open meeting at Northfield Center Town Hall on October 29, 1956, discussing the feasibility of establishing an LCMS church. The first vesper service was held on January 6, 1957 at Macedonia Elementary School. Pastor Cyril Wismar requested and received permission from the Mission Board-English District to establish Epiphany Mission. Vesper services continued until April 1957 when the worship time was changed to morning services. Land was purchased for the church building in June 1957. The property was consecrated on October 6, 1957. Confirmation classes started in September 1957. Rev. Cyril Wismar's father, Dr. Adolf Wismar was the first "resident" pastor. He returned to Valparaiso University in 1958. Rev. Daniel R. Ludwig was installed as Pastor-Elect on October 5, 1958. Groundbreaking for the church building was held on October 4, 1959. The cornerstone laying was held on June 26, 1960, and the building was dedicated on November 20, 1960. Pastor Ludwig was installed as the first permanent pastor on March 12, 1961. The Walther League was formed in February 1961, and due to growth in the congregation, a second Sunday morning service was added in May 1961. The congregation celebrated their tenth anniversary in October 1967. Rev. Dr. Christian F. Just served the congregation as pastor from 1993 until Epiphany was closed at its final service on July 1, 2018.
