Biographical / Historical
Saint Philip began in 1963 when Rev. Robert W. Weston graduated from Concordia Theological Seminary, Springfield, Illinois, and accepted a call to establish a new LCMS-subsidized congregation in the Sharpstown area of Houston, Texas. A sanctuary was added to the existing house on the church property that seated 175 people, and there were nine Sunday School classrooms. The Service of Dedication was held on February 23, 1964. Saint Philip was chartered on September 8, 1964. Later that month, the congregation voted to purchase a house off-site for a parsonage. It remained the parsonage until it was sold in 1977. The new Sunday School building was dedicated on February 28, 1965. In September 1971, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for a new multi-purpose building. This building was dedicated on September 17, 1972. A new worship sanctuary was built and dedicated on May 17, 1981 that seated 500. The 25th anniversary of the congregation was celebrated in 1988. In 1989, outreach to the Vietnamese community in the neighborhood began. The 35th anniversary of the congregation was celebrated in 1998.
