Biographical / Historical
The first congregation that would eventually be part of this Tri-Parish (formed in September 1978) is Saint John Lutheran Church (Corning, Missouri). This congregation traces her beginning back to 1865. Around 1885, the church building was rolled to Corning from the forest, where it was refurbished and rededicated. The congregation made the decision to join the Missouri Synod that same year. The first pastor in 1865 was Pastor Messalsky, who kept good records. Between 1871 and 1882, the first school and parsonage were built, a new graveyard was purchased snd 40 acres of land obtained, and the first teacher was called. In the summer of 1885, the first parsonage burned down. In 1876, a group from Saint John (Corning, Missouri) decided to separate and form Saint Peter Lutheran Church, the second congregation of the Tri-Parish. In 1877, a church building was built south of Craig, Missouri, which served both as the church and Christian day school. A parsonage was built in 1881. In 1890, a larger church building was built. The old church building continued to serve as the school intil 1934, and after that, as the parish hall. The first constitution of the congregation forbade the pastor to preach in any other language but German. However, about the time of World War I, English began to be utilized. In July 1993, both Saint John and Saint Peter were severely damaged from flooding. During the flood and the reconstruction that took place afterwards, services for all three congregations were held at Concordia Lutheran Church (Mound City, Missouri). That December, Saint Peter began holding services in their restored parish hall, and were able to use their church building again in March 1994. The last of the Tri-Parish congregations was Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church (Mound City, Missouri) which began in 1955. The initial worship services were held in the former American Legion Hall, above Bower's Market, requiring people to climb 23 steps to reach the chapel that was created there. The Chapel was dedicated on March 11, 1956. Groundbreaking for the church building took place on July 14, 1957, and the building was dedicated on March 16, 1958. Concordia had been sharing a pastor with Hope, Maryville. They voted to have their own pastor and construct a parsonage on May 15, 1959. Concordia celebrated their 10th anniversary on March 13, 1966, and 20th on March 14, 1975. The Tri-Parish was formed with Saint John (Corning) and Saint Peter (Craig) in September 1978. Concordia's 25th was celebrated on May 31, 1981. From the Lutheran Annual, it appears that all three congregation closed during 2013, since none of them appear in the 2014 edition.
