Biographical / Historical
Several attempts were made to organize a Lutheran congregation in Vallejo. There are church records going back to 1899. During the early 1900s, Rev. George C. Jacobsen laid much of the groundwork for Northern California missions. In the early 1920s, Pastor Mathwig conducted services at Vallejo. The actual congregation was not organized until 1932. The cornerstone laying service took place on 6/10/1934. A 10th anniversary service of the congregation was held on October 29, 1945, which had been postponed until the armistice at the end of World War 2 had been signed. An addition to the building was completed and dedicated on November 26, 1950. An education wing was dedicated on May 24, 1970. Unfortunately, the Synod controversies lead Pastor Halverson and his followers to leave the Synod and establish their own church. The property was shared for services until the court judged that the church property belonged to the LCMS. The congregation continued to thrive, despite adversity. It appears that the congregation closed in 2009. (CHI does not have definitive information concerning a closing date.)
