Biographical / Historical

Saint Peter, Humboldt, Kansas was founded in 1863, and Rev. F. W. Lange was the first pastor. He also served at preaching stations at Owl Creek, Leroy, Garnett, Paola, and Fort Scott. Congregations developed at Owl Creek and Paola. Rev. T. F. Walther was called in 1870. Rev. D. F. H. Wesche served between 1871-1875. Saint Peter Evangelical Cemetery was made from 2 1/2 acres of land deeded to the church in 1893. Rev. F. Karth was pastor of both Saint Peter and Zion, Independence from 1876-1878. Rev. A. D. Kraemer served both congregations from 1878-1886. Rev. D. Stemmerman served Saint Peter, Owl Creek and Leroy from 1886-1891. Rev. J. V. Kauffeld served Saint Peter and Owl Creek from 1891-1901. Rev. J. W. Werling served Saint Peter from 1902-1910 and was followed by Rev. W. T. Vogel from 1910-1918. From 1914-1919, Saint Peter had a school accredited by the state. Rev. P. C. Kraus served from 1918-1950. In 1943 the Kansas District Mission Committee decided to organize a congregation in Chanute: Zion Lutheran. Fifty-one communicant members and 76 souls were released to Zion. Rev. Willis E. Laetsch, who was pastor at Zion, Chanute became pastor in 1951. Rev. Herman C. Seyfert was intalled as pastor in 1956. Ground was broken for a new church building in 10/1958, and the church building along with an education building were dedicated on 8/16/1959. Rev. Seyfert retired in 1974 when Rev. Arlin E. Alpers was called and installed. Rev. Alpers retired in 1993 and Rev. David Meier was installed in 1994. Ken Lott was installed as Certified Lutheran Lay Minister in 2000.
