Summer 1862, a small group of Lutherans in Saint Paul [MN] appealed to Pastor John Horst of Minneapolis for pastoral services. Rev. E. Rolf at that time was visiting relatives in Carver County due to failing health. His congregation was near Columbus, Indiana. As he was about to return home he was asked to preach a sermon to the Saint Paul Lutherans. The service was in the Brandhorst home, six were present. Rev. Horst then served this group of Lutherans. On September 27, 1863 four families organized as the Evangelical Lutheran Zion Church and called Rev. E. Rolf as their pastor.
