Scope and Contents
The collection consists of letters from Tschopp to his parents and siblings. The letters "reveal the importance of family relationships and a strong support system from family and friends, but also the paramount position that the church and religious background played during those troublesome times" (from the Foreword by his wife, Dorothy, to the published collection of letters, 2000.)

Biographical / Historical
Herbert Tschopp, a native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, enlisted in the U.S. Navy in December 1941 at age 18 and served for two and a half years on the USS Thomas Jefferson, followed by a year on the USS Tolavana, during World War 2. The first was a transport ship that participated in five invasions in the European Theater of War; the latter was an oil tanker in the Pacific.
