Scope and Contents

The collection contains Air Force chaplaincy files, files on various charities, files regarding "Parables", correspondence, awards and honors, postcards, photographs, yearbooks, manuals, minutes, and convention and conference proceedings. There is also a large collection of Scharlemann's teaching notes and files.

Biographical / Historical

Martin Scharlemann was born on 28 December 1910 in Nashville, Illinois. He graduated from Concordia Seminary, Saint Louis, in 1934 and served congregations in Minnesota, Indiana, Missouri, and Wisconsin. In 1941 he became an Air Force chaplain and served for eleven years. He served on the faculty of Concordia Seminary, Saint Louis from 1952 until 1982. For the synod he served on the Commission on Theology and Church Relations, the Social Concerns Commission, and the Commission on Church Literature. Scharlemann died on 23 August 1982.
