Biographical / Historical
Stellhorn was born 2 October 1841 at Bruenighorstedt, Hannover. He immigrated with his parents in 1854 to Fort Wayne, Indiana, and attended the Missouri Synod prep school there, then graduated from Concordia Seminary, Saint Louis, in 1865. He served as assistant pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Saint Louis, 1865-1867, and as pastor at Zion Lutheran Church, Corunna, Indiana, 1867-1869. He was a professor at Northwestern College, Watertown, Wisconsin, 1869-1874, and at Concordia College, Fort Wayne, 1874-1881. In 1881 he left the Missouri Synod over the issue of predestination and joined the faculty of Capital University and Seminary, Columbus, Ohio (Ohio Synod), where he served as university president (1894-1900) and seminary dean (1908-1919). He died 17 March 1919. He wrote numerous articles of Ohio Synod publications and pamphlets opposing C. F. W. Walther's position during the predestination controversy.
