Scope and Contents

The collection consists of biographical information, a small amount of general correspondence, a few sermons, photographs and documents related to Sieck's work with the North American Emergency Planning Council (NAEPC), especially reports of European survey trips by Lawrence Meyer (1946-48), correspondence related to the Bad Boll discussions with German Lutheran leaders (1948-49) and materials on the Lutheran World Convention, the predecessor body of the Lutheran World Federation. There are also some wire recordings and a guest register.

Biographical / Historical

Louis John Sieck was born on 11 March 1884 in Erie, Pennsylvania. In 1894, at the age of ten, he entered Saint John College, Winfield, Kansas where his father served as the first president. In 1895 he transferred to Concordia College, Milwaukee where he completed his studies in 1901. In 1904 he graduated from Concordia Seminary, Saint Louis. He was ordained and installed as assistant pastor to Rev. F. Pfotenhauer of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg, Minnesota. From 1905 to 1914 he was the assistant pastor to Rev. Charles Obermeyer of Zion Lutheran Church in Saint Louis. He succeeded Obermeyer and served Zion as senior pastor from 1914 to 1943. In 1943 he succeeded Dr. Ludwig Fuerbringer as the president of Concordia Seminary, Saint Louis. He also served as a member of the Board of Control of the seminary from 1923 to 1943, chair and director of the Board of Directors of KFUO from 1926 to 1943, chair of the National Advisory Emergency Planning Council and president of the Lutheran Publicity Organization, which he organized. He died on 14 October 1952.
