Biographical / Historical

Gustav Seyffarth was born on 13 July 1796 in Uebigau, Germany. After attending the Fuerstenschule of Saint Afra at Meissen, he entered the University of Leipzig where he was given a position in 1823. After his promotion to Head of Studies on Egyptian Literature, he travelled and gathered Egyptian papyri copies (1826 to 1828) which became the fifteen folio-volumes of the "Bibliotheca Aegyptica Manuscripts". In 1830 he became a professor of Archeology, a position he held until his resignation in 1854. He emigrated to America in 1856 and accepted a call to Concordia Collegium in Saint Louis. He resigned in the fall of 1859, when he moved to New York to continue his studies. He died on 17 November 1885.
