Scope and Contents

The collection contains a study on government in the Missouri Synod (1956) and materials relating to his doctoral dissertation, as well as later writings. It also contains an autobiography written in 1996.

Biographical / Historical

Scherer was born 30 March 1922 at Fort Wayne, Indiana. He received his education at Concordia College (Fort Wayne) and Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis, M.Div., 1946). He also took undergraduate course in sociology at Washington University (Saint Louis) while a student at the seminary. He did graduate work in sociology at the University of Chicago (A.M., 1947; Ph.D., 1963). From 1950 to 1963 he was a professor in the department of sociology and social work at Valparaiso University. He was director of research operations and director of church ministry studies for the National Council of Churches from 1963 to 1966. In 1966 he was appointed as the first protestant on the faculty of Loyola University of Chicago, serving as a professor of sociology there until his retirement in 1990.
