Biographical / Historical
Saint Matthew was formed by members of Zion Lutheran who wanted to have a church closer to their homes. They organized on March 15, 1903, and built a chapel on Carleton St. (now Cabot). The building was dedicated on August 30, 1903, and was used as a church and school. The first pastor was. Rev. Albert Wahl. They left the LCMS in 1963 and joined the Lutheran Churches of the Reformation, which they then left in 1972 and became independent. In 1996 they joined the Evangelical Lutheran Synod. The congregation closed in 2007. A more complete history can be found in "Histories of the Lutheran Churches in the City of Detroit Michigan".
