Biographical / Historical
Alvin Lee Barry was born 4 August 1931 in Woodbine, Iowa. Ordained in 1956, he was pastor at four congregations from 1956 to 1967. He served as counselor for mission stewardship for the Iowa District West of the Missouri Synod from 1967 to 1975, executive secretary of the Board for Missions of the synod from 1975 to 1977, executive for missions, stewardship and social ministry of the Iowa District East from 1977 to 1982 and president of the Iowa District East from 1982 to 1992. In 1992 he was elected as the eleventh president of the Missouri Synod, serving until his death on 23 March 2001.
