LCMS. Department of Social Welfare

The Board of Social Ministry (1967-1969) was formerly known as the Department of Social Welfare (1950-1967). It merged with the Board for World Relief in 1969 to form the Board of Social Ministry and World Relief. However, convention time ran out, and no bylaws or guidelines for the board were in place until 1973; the two boards were still listed separately in the 1971 Handbook. Founded in 1950; responsibilities broadened and the name changed to the Board for Social Ministry in 1967.
